Crowns

Crowns combine significant strength and beautiful aesthetics. Basically, a crown is a beautiful tooth that is created in a laboratory and is placed on top of an existing tooth, covering that tooth completely.

Crowns are a powerful method for creating beautiful smiles. We can replace front teeth that are badly misshapen or damaged, or repair teeth that have undergone root canals, severe erosion or other problems. Since crowns cover the existing tooth completely, crowns are extremely strong AND extremely beautiful.

When most people think of crowns they envision a black line at the gum line of the crown. Today's dental materials are so advanced that this unsightly phenomenon can be eliminated.

The Procedure
Crowns are done in two office visits. We begin by preparing the tooth to receive a temporary crown. This preparation is done by shaping the tooth to accept the bonding of the porcelain crown that sits on or covers the existing tooth.

One of the things that distinguishes our practice from other dental practices is our aesthetic temporary prototype crowns. We use the time during the fabrication of the temporary crowns to create the most beautiful appearance possible.

We shape the temporaries into a smile that YOU desire. Teeth come in many different shapes: rounded, square, pointed, deep or shallow embrasures (the "V" shaped notch between the biting edges of adjacent teeth). These shapes should fit your face and be what YOU think of as beautiful. We then send an exact duplicate of these prototype temporaries for the lab technician to model your real crowns from. It is this time of aesthetic selection by YOU that allows us to produce the beautiful results that you desire. (This is done for anterior crowns. Crowns in the posterior do not require this type of detail.)

Once the temporaries are completed, we place them on your teeth and you go about your day. We then send all of the necessary information we've gathered to our dental laboratory. When the permanent crowns are completed (about 3-4 weeks - faster lab service is available) you return to the office for the placement of the final crowns (beautiful shape that you chose).

Patients often ask us if this procedure is painful. It is not (in most cases). The shaping of the tooth is done with local anesthetic and the bonding of the crown is basically a high tech cementing of the crown to your existing tooth.

Crowns are very durable, DO NOT STAIN and should last for many years.
